The Southern Companion

During the course of the year the Rhythmtree team go to many gigs on and off the Island. Sometimes we’re working, sometimes it’s purely for pleasure but we’ve always got our eyes and ears open for great new acts we can invite to our weekend in the sun.
Sometimes though a band catches our attention because of the recommendations and endorsements of others and when, in the space of a month, two promoters from different ends of the country rave about an act and then, totally independently, three different friends post on Facebook about what a great time they’ve had seeing that same group, we are bound to sit up, take notice and take the first opportunity we can to go and check them out for ourselves.

The Southern Companion are an Americana/Country band from the South Coast who more than live up to their endorsements and with four nominations and two winners gongs (Best album and The Horizon Award) from the 2016 British Country Music Awards we’re clearly not the only people who think they’re special. Led by the charismatic and beardy Darren Hodson and backed by a band who between them have CV’s that include playing with Tom Jones, Lulu, Rumer, James Morrison, Lana Del Ray, John Isley, Vanessa May and many others they ooze quality and pleasure in performing a big old blending up of all the music they love, a sonic whirlpool were the UK and US currents meet with influences and inspirations ranging from Tom Petty, Ryan Adams and Ray Lamontagne to The Black Crowes, Butch Walker, Derek Trucks, The Allman Brothers, The Band and The Faces.

We think you’re going to love them and that they’ll provide the perfect musical backdrop for a sunny Sunday afternoon when they take to our mainstage.
