Hilarious, funky and quintessentially British, they haven't just survived the loss of their inspirational leader they’ve kept his vision alive whilst maturing and developing as a group and going on to cement their place as one of the UK’s truly great live bands.
The charming Derek “The Draw” Hussey has stepped up from being Ian Dury’s long term friend, driver, chaperone and sidekick and delivers the funny, frank, fearless and familiar lyrics with a perfect deadpan authenticity that never descends to imitation. With the original team of musical creators around him he’s a natural and engaging fit as the band deliver their crazy, lovable mix of rock’n’roll, music hall, jazz and soul grooves.
With original members and co-writers Chaz Jankel (guitar), Mick Gallagher (keyboards) and the amazing bassist Norman Watt-Roy in their midst The Blockheads still clearly love what they do and relish every minute on stage. It’s no wonder when they’ve got so many unique and universally loved songs giving them reasons to be cheerful. Join them at the Rhythmtree main stage on Sunday evening and alongside their more recent songs like “Greed” and “Express Yourself” you’ll get to hear Blockhead classics like “What a Waste”, “Sweet Gene Vincent”, “Sex and Drugs and Rock’n’Roll”, “Clever Trevor” and, of course, “Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick” and we guarantee you’ll be going to bed that night with a great big smile on your face.
